Why Success Never Feels Like Enough
By Andy Petranek
You’ve built the life you wanted. So why doesn’t it feel like enough?
Here’s a real confession. A while back, I went 4 months without bringing on a new coaching client.
4 months. And I did what I always do with a gap like that. I turned it into a verdict on me. That I’d lost whatever I had. That the work never really mattered. That I was a fraud who’d finally been found out.
That’s the voice that wakes me at 3am. Calm and certain, the way it always sounds. “You’re done. You’ll never land another client.”
Here’s some context on what that voice ignores. I led a Marine platoon in combat. I started a gym with 8 members and grew it into a community of hundreds, one of the first of its kind anywhere in the country. Then I built an online health program from scratch that reached a quarter of a million people and a few million dollars a year. By every external measure, I’d made it.
None of that is in the room at 3am. The voice doesn’t care.
That’s the part that stopped me. I’ve got decades of evidence, filed and notarized, and the voice doesn’t so much as blink.
Which finally told me something. If all that proof can’t quiet the voice, the proof was never what the voice was about.
The voice runs on an old program. I installed it a long time ago, back when I decided that being worth something was a thing you earn. Earn it with results. Earn it with the next win. And keep producing, because the day you stop, you go back to being nothing.
You can see the trap. A worth-by-achievement identity has no finish line. You hit the number, and the number moves. You sign the client, and the relief lasts about a Tuesday.
I’d know. I built that machine and ran it at full throttle for 30 years.
So what do I actually do at 3am, when it’s screaming?
First, I remember the thought is just noise. Your brain fires something like 60,000 to 80,000 thoughts a day, and most of them are junk. The 3am voice is one of the loud ones. I use a dumb acronym for it that I’m a little embarrassed still works: FEAR. False evidence appearing real. The thought feels true. That’s a different thing from being true.
Then I get physical, because you can’t think your way out of 3am.
I breathe out twice as long as I breathe in. Long exhale, again and again, until my nervous system gets the message that nothing’s actually on fire.
I get out of the bed. Different room, glass of water, anything that changes the picture.
And when it’s really bad, I shake. Literally. Stand up and shake it off like a dog climbing out of a lake. Looks absurd. Works almost every time.
None of this is a cure. I spent decades building the pattern, so I’m not tearing it down in one bad night. But it loosens the grip enough to get back to sleep, and some nights that’s the whole win.
Here’s what’s underneath all of it, and I’ll say it plainly even though a part of me still wants to argue.
You were enough before any of it. Before the first client. Before the first company. Before the Marines, before the podium, before the number in the bank.
The voice panics because it believes your worth is on the line every single day. It’s trying to protect you from a threat that stopped being real a long time ago.
So watch where you keep looking for “enough.” The next client. The exit. The bigger house. The car. The income bump. The promotion. The vacation that finally does it. The person who finally makes you feel okay. I’ve chased most of those. They’re great. And not one of them lives at the address called Enough, because that address is inside you, and it’s already occupied.
Go get the client anyway. Build the thing. Want the win. I still do, and I want it for you too. Just stop putting your worth up as collateral.
That’s the work I’m doing at 3am. Still in progress. Probably always will be.
With love, Andy
